Inconel is the hardest class of work in the shop for a reason. Nickel-based superalloys retain strength at temperature, so the material fights the tool instead of shearing cleanly; heat concentrates at the cutting edge and drives rapid notch and flank wear. The alloy work hardens aggressively — a rubbing tool leaves a skin harder than the parent stock, which then destroys the next pass. Age-hardened 718 adds abrasive precipitates, and chips come off tough and gummy, welding to the edge unless evacuation and coolant pressure are right.

We run Inconel with rigid setups, sharp positive-geometry carbide or ceramic tooling on dedicated holders, reduced surface speed with elevated feed to keep the edge under the hardened layer, and high-pressure coolant directed at the shear zone. Depth of cut is varied deliberately so wear never concentrates in one place on the insert. Where geometry cannot be milled or turned economically — narrow slots, sharp internal corners, hardened features after aging — we move the work to wire and sinker EDM rather than forcing a cutter. Tool life is tracked per operation so production releases repeat instead of drifting.

Do you machine Inconel before or after aging?

Both. Rough and semi-finish operations usually run in the solution-treated condition, with finishing after aging where the print requires final dimensions in the hardened state. Hardened features that cannot be cut economically move to EDM.

Which Inconel alloys are you set up for?

Inconel 625 and Inconel 718 are the two we run routinely, with certified bar and plate from approved mills and full material certification supplied.

Does Inconel cost more to machine than stainless?

Yes — cycle times are longer and tool consumption is significantly higher. We quote it with realistic tool life per operation rather than optimistic feeds, so the released price holds across the program.
