Titanium punishes anything approximate. Its low thermal conductivity keeps cutting heat in the tool rather than carrying it away in the chip, so edge temperature climbs fast and coatings break down long before the insert looks worn. It work hardens the moment a tool dwells or rubs, galls onto the cutting edge, and its comparatively low modulus lets thin walls deflect and chatter under load. Long, stringy chips wrap the tool if evacuation is not deliberate, and springback after each pass moves the finished dimension away from where the roughing cut left it.

We machine titanium the way the material demands: constant chip load with trochoidal and high-feed strategies, rigid zero-point workholding, high-pressure through-tool coolant, dedicated titanium tooling that never sees another alloy, and conservative radial engagement so the edge stays in the cut instead of re-entering hardened material. Finish passes are separated from roughing, with stress relief scheduled between operations when the print calls for it. Five-axis work runs on the Okuma trunnions so deep pockets and compound angles are reached in one setup — fewer setups means fewer chances for deflection to stack up.

Which titanium grades do you run?

Grade 2 commercially pure titanium and Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V), including AMS 4911 sheet and plate and AMS 4928 bar. Certified material comes from approved mills with certs supplied on shipment.

How tight can you hold features in titanium?

Milled features run to a standard ±.001″ and turned diameters to ±.0005″. Selected critical features are held to ±.0001″ with in-process gaging and CMM verification, quoted feature by feature.

Can you manage distortion on thin-wall titanium parts?

Yes. We stage roughing and finishing, use supported workholding rather than clamping pressure alone, and schedule stress relief between operations when wall thickness and print flatness call for it.
